What is Treclin Gel and How Does It Work

Treclin Gel is a prescription acne treatment that combines two active ingredients: tretinoin 0.025% and clindamycin phosphate 1.2%. Tretinoin belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, which work by normalising skin cell turnover and preventing the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). Clindamycin is an antibiotic that reduces the bacteria on your skin that contribute to acne inflammation.

This dual-action formulation targets multiple causes of acne simultaneously. The tretinoin component helps unclog pores and reduces the formation of new acne lesions, while clindamycin tackles the bacterial component of acne, particularly Propionibacterium acnes. Together, these ingredients provide a comprehensive approach to acne treatment.

 

Active Ingredients and Formulation

Each gram of Treclin Gel contains tretinoin 0.25mg (0.025%) and clindamycin phosphate equivalent to 12mg (1.2%) clindamycin. The gel base is designed for optimal absorption and skin tolerance. The tretinoin in this formulation is a form of vitamin A that has been clinically proven to treat acne by affecting skin cell development and turnover.

The gel formulation is specifically chosen because it provides good skin penetration while being less irritating than some other topical preparations. This makes it suitable for patients who may have experienced irritation with other retinoid treatments.

 

Who Can Use Treclin Gel

Treclin Gel is prescribed for patients aged 12 years and older who have acne vulgaris. Your doctor will determine if this treatment is appropriate for your specific type and severity of acne. It is particularly effective for inflammatory acne that includes papules and pustules, as well as comedonal acne.

Treatment Duration and Expectations

Your doctor will monitor your progress and may adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

Some patients may experience a temporary worsening of acne during the first few weeks of treatment, known as "purging." This is normal and occurs as the tretinoin brings underlying comedones to the surface more quickly. Continuing treatment as prescribed is important for achieving the best results.

 

Important Precautions and Contraindications

You should not use Treclin Gel if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as tretinoin can cause birth defects. You should also avoid this treatment if you have a known allergy to tretinoin, clindamycin, or any other ingredients in the gel. If you have a history of colitis or inflammatory bowel conditions, discuss this with your doctor before starting treatment.

During treatment, your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight, so you should use appropriate sun protection and limit sun exposure. Avoid using other potentially irritating skincare products, particularly those containing alcohol, astringents, or other acne treatments unless specifically advised by your doctor.
